IncluCities Interview

IncluCities continues the series presenting the key people behind the project with a special double interview. Vincent Vanhalewyn, alderman responsible for social cohesion in Schaerbeek, and Janaki Decleire, Director of VIA association, a vital project partner, answer questions on the integration of migrants and the impacts of the Ukrainian refugee crisis on the municipality of Schaerbeek, an IncluCities mentor city.

‍Foreword

Dear friends, followers, partners of the project and beyond,

On December 18, we celebrated International Migrants Day, a moment to reflect on our achievements. 

Being IncluCities, a project that touches upon many challenges that profoundly shaped 2022, I would like to recall how, even though on a small scale, we perhaps contributed to improving the lives of the people on the move. In the third year, we managed to involve some of the local migrant communities in our activities and made their voices heard. And this has been the key milestone of 2022, at least for me.

The efforts we put into changing the narrative around migrant reception and inclusion this year by shedding light on the impressive work that local governments made during this last wave of migration, mainly from Ukraine, were enormous. We spread the word about IncluCities thanks to various communications efforts, press releases, social media presence, events, study visits, one-stop shops, training academies, and meetings with local support networks. Together with us at the CEMR, partners contributed to the visibility of the project that exceeded our expectations. This earned us the presence in some of the most prominent discussions around migration and inclusion: the 7th European Migration Forum, the 25th International Metropolis Conference and the Partnership on the Inclusion of Migrants and Refugees of the Urban Agenda of the EU.

I want to thank all of you, who are part of this story, one by one!

‍News from IncluCities

IncluCities is slowly reaching the final line. But before we invite you to the closing conference in March 2023, let us take a look at what we've done in the past months: submitted eight deliverables, organised training academies and participated in international events. Moreover, we talked to Gints Reinsons in Jelgava about their management of the current refugee crisis. We organised an event on effective multilevel governance in the field of migration with guest speakers from the OECD and the European Parliament.

While IncluCities partners are preparing or already organising IncluCities exhibitions in their territories, CEMR is busy producing thematic toolkits and infographics. We have some best practices and one-stop shops to share too. 

In the past few weeks, our partners, BRULOCALIS, FEMP and VVSG organised four training academies to share project's outcomes and lessons learned with a broader audience. In the past six months there have also been some other milestones we want to remind you of.

‍Every day, countless people in Europe face discrimination and exclusion, the causes of which are complex and intersecting. Intersectionality can guide the way to protecting everyone’s rights in an inclusive way. The New CEMR publication includes an accessible presentation of what intersectionality is for non-experts and how they can apply it in their work. Read more

Every two years, the "PLATFORMAwards" highlight best practices in city-to-city and region-to-region development cooperation. For this 3rd edition of the PLATFORMA awards, a jury of international experts chose the Belgian Federal Programme for Communal International Cooperation (PCIC) between Anderlecht and Marsassoum as the most exemplary of the 18 projects submitted. This year, the jury also decided to reward all European and Ukrainian local authorities cooperating with a special prize.  Read more

‍Sustainable practices on integration - SPRING - gathers, summarises and shares the best available research and evidence on integration. The SprINg initiative empowers partitioners to identify, adapt and upscale promising existing practices to their specific contexts. They explore the qualities of ‘good’ practices while introducing SprINg’s tools to help practitioners identify and transfer practices to meet their needs.  Read more
